About Konvert

Konvert turns a video link into an audio file. Paste a link, choose a format, download the sound. That's all it does, and it tries to do it well.

What Konvert is

Konvert is a free web tool for extracting the audio track from an online video and saving it as MP3 (at 128, 192 or 320 kbps), M4A, OPUS, WAV or FLAC. It runs entirely in your browser on iPhone, iPad, Android, Mac, Windows and Linux, with no app, extension or account.

Today it works with YouTube: regular videos, Shorts, live replays and YouTube Music links, up to 1 hour long.

Why it exists

People often need just the sound from a video: a lecture to listen to on the way to work, a talk to transcribe, a clip of their own performance, a Creative Commons track for a video project. Getting that audio shouldn't mean installing software, creating an account or guessing which button is the real one.

Konvert is meant to be the calm option: one clear box, a handful of honest choices, and a file you can trust.

How it works under the hood

Conversion happens on our server, using two widely used open-source tools: yt-dlp, which reads video pages and downloads media streams, and FFmpeg, which converts audio between formats. Here's what happens when you press Convert:

  1. The link is checked. It has to point to one video on a supported site. Playlist and channel links are turned away with a message saying why.
  2. The video's details are read. We fetch its title and length without downloading anything, and stop right there if it's longer than 1 hour or isn't publicly available.
  3. The audio is downloaded. We request the best available audio-only stream, so the video picture usually isn't downloaded at all.
  4. FFmpeg converts it. MP3 is encoded at the bitrate you picked. When YouTube's original stream is already Opus and you choose OPUS, it's saved as-is with no re-encoding.
  5. You download it. On our server the file is named with a random job ID, never the video's title. The copy you download is named after the title.
  6. It's deleted. The file and the job's details are removed automatically 30 minutes after you start.

Our principles

Privacy by default

We keep only what a conversion needs, for as long as it needs it. Files and job details are deleted after 30 minutes, and there's no conversion history. Read the privacy policy for the details.

No accounts

No sign-up, no email address, no password. You shouldn't have to hand over personal details to save a sound file.

Honest limits

Videos up to 1 hour, up to 10 conversions an hour, and plain-language errors when something can't work. We'd rather tell you no than pretend.

Responsible use

Konvert is for content you own, public-domain works, suitably licensed content such as Creative Commons, and content you have permission to use. It doesn't bypass sign-in, age checks, paywalls or copy protection. See copyright basics.

What's next

Support for Facebook and TikTok videos is in development and coming soon. Each needs extra care before it goes live: many Facebook videos are only available to signed-in viewers, and TikTok often serves a watermarked re-encode rather than the original audio. When they're ready, their pages will turn into working converters.

Independent and unaffiliated

Konvert is an independent tool. It isn't affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by YouTube, Google, Facebook, Meta, TikTok or ByteDance. Their names appear on this site only to describe which links work. yt-dlp and FFmpeg are independent open-source projects, and Konvert isn't affiliated with them either.
